Introduction and Mirror List

These software mirrors are provided by the Research Information Technology Group at Harvard Medical School as a service to the Harvard University computing community. We are happy to mirror additional software archives upon request, subject to space constraints on our mirror server. If there's a software archive for which a local mirror would be useful to you and it isn't listed here, please let us know.

Using Mirrors with Software Installation and Update Tools

CPAN

When you configure CPAN the first time you run it (cpan or perl -MCPAN -eshell), you'll be asked to select a CPAN mirror site. Once you get past the numerical list of predefined mirror sites, supply the HMS CPAN mirror URL: http://mirrors.med.harvard.edu/cpan/.

If you've already been using CPAN and would like to reconfigure it to use the HMS CPAN mirror, first start the CPAN shell (cpan or perl -MCPAN -eshell) and then type o conf urllist to see your current mirror site setting:

cpan> o conf urllist
    urllist
        ftp://archive.progeny.com/CPAN/
        ftp://cpan.pair.com/pub/CPAN/
        ftp://csociety-ftp.ecn.purdue.edu/pub/CPAN

Type 'o conf' to view configuration edit options

cpan>

You can then use o conf urllist shift to remove values from the list, and o conf urllist push ... to add the HMS CPAN mirror:

cpan> o conf urllist shift

cpan> o conf urllist shift

cpan> o conf urllist shift

cpan> o conf urllist
    urllist
Type 'o conf' to view configuration edit options

cpan> o conf urllist push http://mirrors.med.harvard.edu/cpan/

cpan> o conf urllist
    urllist
        http://mirrors.med.harvard.edu/cpan/
Type 'o conf' to view configuration edit options

cpan> o conf commit
commit: wrote /etc/perl/CPAN/Config.pm

cpan>

Debian GNU/Linux

You can list our Debian mirror in your /etc/apt/sources.list file so that newly installed and updated packages will be downloaded from the mirror.

Here is an example sources.list which uses the HMS Debian mirror, and Debian's security.debian.org. (You can include the deb-src line if you'd like to be able to easily retrieve source packages with apt-get source ....)

deb http://mirrors.med.harvard.edu/debian squeeze main non-free contrib
deb http://security.debian.org/ sarge/updates main non-free contrib

deb-src http://mirrors.med.harvard.edu/debian squeeze main non-free contrib

Debian GNU/Linux Backports

deb http://mirrors.med.harvard.edu/debian-backports squeeze-backports main non-free contrib

Debian GNU/Linux Multimedia

deb http://mirrors.med.harvard.edu/debian-multimedia squeeze main

Debian GNU/Linux security updates

Note that we are an unofficial mirror for the Debian security archive. There are only a handful of official mirrors of this archive (see http://www.debian.org/security/faq#mirror); consider carefully whether you want to use our unofficial mirror.
deb http://mirrors.med.harvard.edu/debian-security squeeze/updates main non-free contrib

Fedora Core

You can use our Fedora Core mirror for core and update binary repositories only. Do not change your configuration for -debug or -source repositories to use our mirror.

If you want to have your Fedora Core system check for updates nightly, set the yum service to start at boot time:

# /sbin/chkconfig yum on

Edit the appropriate file in /etc/yum.repos.d/ (either fedora-core.repo or fedora-updates.repo). Comment the mirrorlist entry under [core] or [updates] and add a baseurl entry.

Here is a sample [core] section from /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-core.repo for a Fedora Core 5 system.

[core]
name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch
#baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/$releasever/$basearch/os/
baseurl=http://mirrors.med.harvard.edu/fedora/$releasever/$basearch/os/
#mirrorlist=http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors/fedora-core-$releasever
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY

CD and DVD ISO images are also available for supported architectures. See http://mirrors.med.harvard.edu/fedora/ then navigate to the Fedora Core version you want, then the architecture you want, then click on the iso directory.

Ubuntu

Here is a recommended /etc/apt/sources.list for Ubuntu 6.06 LTS "Dapper Drake", using the HMS Ubuntu mirror. You can also edit the repositories your Ubuntu installation uses using the Synaptic Package Manager (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager, then choose Settings -> Repositories).
deb http://mirrors.med.harvard.edu/ubuntu dapper main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main restricted universe multiverse
